Everything you need to know about using Roomy - from creating your profile to matching with roommates, browsing listings, chatting in groups, and getting help from Roomy AI.

Overview

Roomy is a mobile app that helps students, professionals, and property owners find compatible roommates and shared homes - especially when moving to a new country.

With Roomy you can build a profile, browse matches and listings, chat one-on-one or in groups, post in the community, verify your identity, and ask Roomy AI for help in plain language.

Create your account

  1. Open the app and choose email signup or Google sign-in
  2. Verify your email if prompted
  3. Select your account type (student, roommate seeker, or owner)
  4. Choose your preferred language (English, French, or Spanish)
  5. Complete the profile steps so Roomy can start matching you

Account types

Your account type shapes what you see first and which tools are highlighted. You can still browse both roommates and listings.

Student

Built for people relocating for school. University, budget, move-in date, and lifestyle details help improve your matches.

Roommate seeker / professional

Ideal if you are moving for work or simply need a compatible person to share a home with. Focus on budget, city, and lifestyle.

Property owner

Create and manage listings, review visit requests, and use smart matching to find qualified tenants or roommates for your property.

Profile setup

A complete profile improves your visibility and compatibility scores. You can edit everything later in Settings.

What to add

  • Profile photo, bio, gender, and age range
  • Country of origin, current or target city, and languages
  • University or profession (when relevant)
  • Lifestyle preferences: smoking, pets, guests, sleep schedule, and room type
  • Budget, preferred move-in date, and destination cities
Looking for roommates toggleOn your Profile screen, turn on “I am looking for roommates” so your profile appears in search and match swipes. Turn it off anytime if you are no longer searching.

Profile completion percentage shows how finished your setup is. Filling more fields usually leads to better recommendations.

Matching & scores

The Matches tab helps you discover people who fit your budget, location, and lifestyle. You will see Top Matches, Newest profiles, and Nearby roomies.

Compatibility score

Each profile can show a match percentage based on shared preferences like budget, city, university, room type, and lifestyle.

Filters

Narrow results with filters such as All, Newest, Nearby, or high-compatibility ranges (for example above 80% or 90%).

Save & message

Bookmark profiles you like and open a chat when you are ready to connect.

Roomy Plus matches

Higher compatibility matches (typically 80%+) may require Roomy Plus depending on your plan.

Listings & housing

The Listings tab is where you browse rooms, studios, and shared apartments. Owners publish listings; seekers explore, favorite, and request visits.

For seekers

  • Search by city, neighborhood, or keywords
  • Filter by budget and other preferences
  • Open Featured and “good fit” recommendations
  • Save favorites and schedule property visits

For owners

  • Create listings with photos, description, amenities, pricing, availability, and house rules
  • Set location details and room information
  • Manage status: draft, active, rented, or paused
  • Review visit requests and chat with interested users

Messaging & groups

Chat safely inside Roomy without sharing your personal phone number first. You can message one-on-one or create groups with three or more people.

Private chats

Start a conversation from a profile or listing. Typing indicators and delivery status help conversations feel live.

Group chats

Create roommate groups to coordinate visits, move-in plans, or shared living logistics with multiple people at once.

Discussions tab

Find all conversations under Discussions, with filters for All, Requests, Groups, and Archives.

Read receipts and some advanced chat features may be part of Roomy Plus.

Community

Community is where people announce moves, share that they have already secured a place, and look for roommates publicly.

  • Post an update about your relocation plans
  • Attach a listing you have already reserved or are sharing
  • Browse posts from others searching in your city
  • Reach people who are planning the same move
Good community postBe clear about city, move-in date, budget, and who you are looking for. Attaching a listing helps others understand the opportunity faster.

Roomy AI

Roomy AI is your in-app roommate assistant. Ask in everyday language and get roommate or listing suggestions without manually setting every filter.

Example prompts

“Find a quiet roommate near campus under $600” or “Help me find someone near my city who likes cooking and gaming after work.”

Daily limits

Free accounts get a limited number of AI requests per day. Roomy Plus unlocks expanded or unlimited access.

Voice input

Where available, you can speak to Roomy AI to speed up profile or listing content.

AI results are helpful starting points - always review profiles and listings yourself before deciding.

Identity verification

Optional identity verification helps build trust. Verified profiles and listings can display a gold badge.

  • Submit a government-issued ID and required details
  • Wait for review (pending, approved, or rejected)
  • Show a verified badge once approved

Verification is not a background check. It confirms document review to help the community feel safer. Learn more in our Privacy Policy.

Settings & privacy

Use Settings to control how you appear and what notifications you receive.

Private Profile

Hide personal details such as bio, lifestyle, budget, and activity from other users when you need more privacy.

Notifications

Choose which alerts you want for messages, matches, listings, and account activity.

Language

Switch between English, French, and Spanish. Your preference syncs with your account.

Blocked users

Block someone to stop contact. Manage blocked users anytime in Settings.

Roomy Plus

Roomy Plus is the optional premium plan for people who want faster, deeper access.

  • Access to higher compatibility matches (typically 80%+)
  • Expanded or unlimited Roomy AI requests
  • Advanced filters and stronger profile visibility
  • Premium badge, group chat invites, and read receipts
  • Higher limits for community posts and owner listings

Plans may be offered weekly, monthly, or yearly through your app store. Manage or cancel subscriptions in your Apple or Google account settings.

Safety tips

Roomy includes tools to help you stay safe - use them and trust your judgment.

  • Prefer verified profiles when possible
  • Keep early conversations inside the app
  • Meet in public places before committing to a move
  • Never send deposits to people you have not carefully vetted
  • Report suspicious listings, posts, or behavior
  • Block users who make you uncomfortable
